HughesNet High Speed Satellite Internet Systems and Services

Activation

If your HughesNet system has already been professionally installed, the following can assist you with activating / commissioning your HughesNet system, as well as setting up your HughesNet E-mail accounts and so on.

HUGHESNET SATELLITES

HughesNet uses a variety of satellites depending upon your location, service plan, and equipment you are using.  Please check out our HughesNet Commissioning Rules page for more information.  This information changes from time to time, and you will be commissioned to whatever the default satellite is on the day you run the HughesNet setup on your modem, so it's a good idea to check out the commissioning rules on the day you plan on activating your system before pointing the dish to ensure you have the proper satellite in mind.

NOTE:  You can commission your HughesNet system on almost any satellite and almost any frequency from the drop down menu, however once the modem is commissioned and resets itself, it will only work on whatever is the default satellite for your equipment, location and service plan.  You can find out which satellite you need to point to if you go to the System Information page in your HughesNet modem at http://192.168.0.1 after commissioning or by checking out the HughesNet Commissioning Rules ahead of time!

COMMISSIONING / UPGRADING A HUGHESNET SYSTEM

NEW EQUIPMENT: Once your system is properly installed and signal strengths have been peaked properly and the dish secured, it is time to commission / activate your system. In order to activate your system, you will need a SAN (Site Account Number) and PIN (Personal Identification Number).  If this is a new installation with new equipment, your installer will have your SAN and PIN on your work order.

UPGRADING:  If you are upgrading from an older modem to a newer modem, you will need your old SAN and PIN which (for the DW6000, DW7000 Modems, can be found in your System Status page of your old modem.  Before unplugging your old modem, go to http://192.168.0.1 and then to System Info to find your SAN and PIN.  If you have a DW4000 or DW4020, the easiest way is to look at the DirecWay paperwork from your original installation, however, if that is not available, you can go to the Program Files / DirecWay folder on your computer and open the PARAM.ACM file in Notepad to view your account # and pin.

USED EQUIPMENT:  If you are installing or activating used equipment, we can assist you in setting up your HughesNet account by filling out our online form at: http://www.montanasatellite.com/hughesnet/service_request.htm which will provide you with a SAN and PIN.  We charge $35 for this Account Setup Service.

After receiving your SAN and PIN, the following steps will help you to get your system online:

bulletPlug everything in, open your browser window and enter http://192.168.0.1/fs/registration/setup.html into the browser address bar.
bulletA HughesNet / DirecWay page will open up and you will see several menu options.
bulletSelect "Registration - Installer" from the menu.
bulletEnter the nearest Zip Code of where the system is located.  This will give you dish pointing coordinates if you haven't done that yet!
bulletConfirm the location and parameters and hit next to continue.
bulletSelect the satellite you are pointed at from the drop down menu... the frequency is not important during this step.  (Click Next to continue!)
bulletNow display the signal strength to ensure you are on and have chosen the correct satellite.  You may go back to the drop down menu and choose an alternate frequency if your signal is weak!
bulletClose the signal strength box and hit next to continue.
bulletClick on "Automatic" to run an Automatic Cross-pole check to confirm your dish is pointed correctly.  You should get a score and a PASS or FAIL.   If it Fails, you will need to re-peak your dish to ensure proper alignment.  (Manual mode will let the cross-pole tests run continuously for dish peaking!)
bulletOnce you have passed the cross-pole tests, continue to the registration screen.
bulletYou will click "Next" at the "SAN & PIN" Registration screen, and after agreeing to the "Terms and Conditions" you will be prompted to enter your SAN (Site Account Number) and PIN (Personal ID Number).
bulletOnce you continue, the system should recognize you or if you are upgrading, the next screen will confirm that you are swapping out one modem for another.
bulletIf you are upgrading, continue through the process and follow the instructions... either way the modem will ask you to close your browser and reset the modem.
bulletOnce the modem resets, and all five lights are on you can enter http://192.168.0.1 into the browser address bar to see the status.
bulletClick on the red, green or yellow button to display "System Status."   You should notice that in the status box it may say (File list changed, downloading new software!)  This is a normal process and should take about 10 - 20 minutes or so to download.
bulletAfter the download, the modem will reset.  (you can tell when it has reset because your status page will be on "Page Cannot Be Displayed" or something like that.  Click "Refresh" and click on what should now be a green button.  Once it says "All Files are Up-To-Date" you should be online and good to go.  Now, you should "force-range" the system to ensure it is using the correct data rates for optimal speeds, etc.
bulletIf the status button is red, there is a possibility that you were commissioned to a different satellite than the one you are pointing to.  Check System Status to confirm, and if it shows a satellite other than the one your are pointed to, a satellite change or re-point will be required.  You will need to re-run this setup after a satellite change has been processed.

We will contact HughesNet and request a satellite change on your behalf for $50.00.
To request a satellite change, please fill out our online form at:
 http://www.montanasatellite.com/hughesnet/hughesnet_satellite_change_request_form.htm

bulletOpen your Internet Browser and enter http://192.168.0.1/fs/advanced/advanced.html into the address bar!
bulletA page should open that displays "Advanced Configuration" for the HughesNet Modem.
bulletClick on installation in the left hand menu, and choose "Force Range" then click "Start" in the box that pops up.
bulletThe modem will test it's connection to the satellite and adjust its' data rates accordinlgy.

bulletYou are now ready to surf!
