HughesNet (formerly DirecWay) satellite Internet systems consist of your choice of a .74m or .98m satellite dish mounted on wall mount, a pole or "ground" mount, or on a non-penetrating roof mount. A 1 watt or 2 watt transmitter / receiver unit is located on the satellite dish arm, and an indoor unit (modem) is placed somewhere inside. HughesNet satellite systems require a dual run of RG6 SCC coaxial cable (one for transmit, one for receive) that connects the transmitter / receiver to the modem. The modem then connects to a computer network hub or to a wired or wireless router via an Ethernet connection. As with any high speed Internet service, Internet speeds, bandwidths and capabilities depends upon the equipment and monthly service package you choose.
The .74m system is the standard for most residential applications... however you may want to consider the .98m system if you would like the best reliability and greater service flexibility. Some of the higher speed monthly service packages require the .98m dish and the 2 watt radio. While both the .74m and the .98m dishes are available with a wall mount bracket, we always recommend mounting your satellite Internet dish on a pole, especially the .98m dishes. Satellite Internet dishes require much more accuracy than a satellite television dish, and therefore can be knocked offline with any sagging and movement A pole mount will offer you the strongest support for the dish, resulting in the most reliable service. Pole mounts require a pole placed in concrete, and a return trip to mount the dish on the pole. HughesNet will not pay for pole mounts, and therefore a $ 150.00 additional non-standard installation charge will apply. ($ 100.00 for the pole mount, $ 50.00 for the return trip in our local service areas!) Please visit our Installation page to see what is included in your Free Standard Installation, as pole mounts, 2nd story mounting, return trips and other installation tasks and so on are not included and will be billed accordingly.
